A Week in the Life of Alex (the work experience)
Monday:
I started the day arriving at 9:30 on the dot. I did arrive early but maps told me the entrance was at the rear of the building. I was let in by Lakota and was shown my own desk! She the proceeded the show me around the entire building and detail some current and old projects such as their movie picnics and the Winter Droving (which was designed by Adrian back in 2011!) after a tour of the site we met in the main office space where I got a cuppa and filled in some forms on health and safety and got a second tour of the place prioritising fire exits and extinguishers.
11:00 - I then had the task of introducing myself to Dropbox and their google drive (from my own computer for the week!) After introducing myself, I set on with the tasks diligently provided to me by a personally printed planner. I set off designing a new game for their Picnic cinema night, after a little browsing I landed on a scavenger hunt. I however have yet to know if this is already a pre-existing game idea.
12:00 - since my other tasks for the day require help and everyone is very busy I have decided to start my blog of the week now, I’m going to finish this first draft.
12:20 - Looking into ‘Canva’, a design tool, and old Winter Droving posters on Dropbox, a file and image management app.
12:30 - 1:00 - i might get my lunch :)
1:30 - Looked at a new design for a Winter Droving posters as they need updated, this is meant to be done tomorrow but everyone is very busy so I figured I’d try get ahead of some of my work, I’m not sure if ‘update’ refers to the design or just the details like date.
2:30 - Still working on the poster but soon we’ll be moving over to making party bags for the picnic. As well as making a fairy for the fairy museum.
3:00 - I started work on the picnic bags and set up a work space for them.
3:30 - Adrian came down and taught me and Lucie how to juggle while he looked for his mini speakers
4:00 - 5:00 - I finished as many of the picnic bags for the cinema picnic as i could once i got in the flow, I’m hoping we ended up at around 50/500 lol. We weren’t able to get round to making the fairies but everyone was so busy and I was never short of things to do.
Tuesday:
9:30- I started on choosing photos from last year's winter droving to make up some new posters. I made 4 in the end, two date ones, one for the droving cup and one for the best dressed pet!
12:30 - we had a team lunch where Connie made falafels and wraps with wedges. It was very good! Then me and Izzy went to a town in the middle of nowhere to pick up a Cinenorth screen and projector kit, and then we had to drive back in the worst rain ever, like a storm.
4:30 - I then helped Izzy unpack with help from Connie and then I tweaked some of the posters to add a little more fair ground flair, to look less like an average modern poster and have some more character.
Wednesday:
9:30 - I arrived and said met Sam the volunteer, who was helping Lucie remove the old shelving units for the Cinenorth DVD collections, as Malcolm had made new shelves that needed put in later that day
10:00 - Me, Sam and Lucie painted the walls so they were ready for the shelves.
10:30 - Me and Sam went to help Lily downstairs with the picnic bags, my job was cutting out the tattoos (which took foreverrrr) while Sam laminated sheets and made up the rest of the bag, which included sweets and badges and a leaflet.
12:30 - I had my lunch break
4:30 - Me and Sam called it and got ready to leave for five, we packed everything up and cleaned down our stations.
Thursday:
9:30 - I started organising the DVD’s onto Malcolm’s new shelves, it took all day but was weirdly therapeutic and a nice little puzzle for me to solve
12:30 - I had my lunch
2:00 - I finished moving the DVD’s over as I experimented with their placement. Quite a few things needed moving around as a result, especially when we added label boxes, which led to us needing to use another row of the shelf. And that took me to the end of my day and time at Eden Arts.
